Le Vieux Roi
Picasso, Pablo
214310 Picasso, Pablo Le Vieux Roi 1963 B. 1152; Ba. 1338 25 1/4'' x 20 3/4'' Linocut in color on Arches wove paper. Signed in pencil lower right and numbered. From the edition of 160 examples. Printed by Arnera Vallauris, published by Edition "Le Patriote," Nice, 1963. The subject of the "Old King" appears often in Picasso's iconography. In this, one of his finest and most colorful linoleum cut prints, Picasso reveals a satirical ambiguity with the image of the king as a jester. Picasso's use of the medium of the linoleum block as a matrix for his printmaking, derived from his desire to find a technique that would allow him to immediately create and pull his own proofs. He eventually devised a method, as used in this work, where he would continue to carve and print from the same block as he added each successive color. In effect, reducing the matrix while creating the printed image. Picasso's linocuts have become amongst his most desirable and historically important graphic works.
