Return of the Prodigal Son

215839 Rembrandt Van Rijn Return of the Prodigal Son 1636 B., Holl. 91; BB. 36-D 6 1/8" x 5 3/8" Etching with drypoint on laid paper with threadbare margins. Signed and dated in the plate, Rembrandt f 1636, center beneath the feet of the father and son. Biorklund Barnard's first and only state, and Nowell Eusticke's first state of four showing very little wear to the the right of the Prodigal son and to the right of the father's sleeve. A late (ll) first state impression as issued by Basan (1807) showing some wear in the dark shadows, but before the toe of the boot at the extreme right cut off. According to Schwartz, this is an illustration from the New Testament, Luke 15: 11-32.
