Presentation in the Temple, Th

Durer, Albrecht

145824 Durer, Albrecht The Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple c.1504-5 B.81; M.193 11 3/4'' x 8 1/4'' Woodcut on laid paper with a High Crown watermark (Meder 20) which dates this lifetime impression from 1480-1525. Signed in the block with the monogram lower right. A superb Meder (a) proof impression, before the 1511 Latin text edition. Seventeen blocks for the "Life of the Virgin" series were completed before Durer's second Italian journey in 1505; in 1510 Durer created two more images to complete the series with an additional title page. The text for this series was written by B. Chelidonius in 1511 and follows the apocryphal gospels of James and the childhood stories of Thomas. Compositionally, the series reflects clearly Durer's interest in perspective drawing. D. Kuhrmann describes "The Life of the Virgin" as nothing less than a `pattern book of perspective' which at the same time reveals how Durer gradually achieved a harmonious equilibrium between the development of pictorial space and the placement of motives within pictorial surface. (Durer exhibition, Munich 1971/72)
