Composition II

Kipniss, Robert

155181 Kipniss, Robert Composition II 1999 G. 087 3 7/8'' x 2 7/16'' Mezzotint on cream wove paper. Signed in pencil lower right. From the artist's proof edition. (An edition of 60 examples numbered in Arabic also exists in addition to 2 printer's proofs, 2 workshop proofs, and 5 trial proofs). Kipniss began to prefer mezzotints in 1990. His experience with the medium prior to 1990 was limited to a few he made in 1982 (he had been working largely with lithographs until that point). The mezzotint process begins by rocking a copper plate. Rocking is the process of roughening the surface with a heavily pointed tool. Kipniss prefers mechanically rocked plates for a more uniform surface on which to work. He usually sketches the image in the plate first with a pencil, and then works with a burnisher to smooth the image onto the surface. The idea is the smoother an area is, the lighter it will be. Areas left untouched will be a velvety black, and everything else will be shades in the middle, hence the name mezzotint meaning "middle tones."
