Published by Albert Skira, 1932. "Poesies" was the first of more than twelve artist's books (livre d'artiste) that Matisse would produce in his lifetime. These types of illustrated books were incredibly popular among artist's in France at the turn of the century. They were produced as limited, deluxe editions, made for collecting. Thanks to the efforts of publishers like Albert Skira and Tériade, such ventures were made possible. Matisse was first approached by Skira in 1930 to illustrate Mallarmé's "Poesies." Mallarmé, an influential French poet pioneered many of the most successful artist movements of the 20th century including Dadaism, Surrealism and Futurism. His poetry inspired artist's as well as musicians such as Claude Debussy whose masterpiece 'Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune' was a free interpretation of Mallarmé's poem of the same title. The images Matisse created for "Poesies" are revered for their simplicity and economy of line that captured the etherial qualities in Mallarmé's poetry.
