St. Bartholomew
Durer, Albrecht
220055 Durer, Albrecht St. Bartholomew 1523 M. 45, B. 47 4 11/16'' x 3'' Engraving on laid paper with threadbare margins. Signed with monogram and dated in the tablet of the plate, left margin. A Meder D impression with the vetical scratches in the upper right corner. Although no watermark is evident, Strauss notes that a Meder D impression was pulled around 1525. Heinrich Wofflen, Die Kunst Albrecht Durer, 1905, notes that the Apostles during this period were quite subdued and one has to look at the the head of each to "seek out what characterizes greatness". Hans Tietze, three volume raisonne, Kritisches Verzeichnis der Wekre Albrecht Durer, 1937-1938, refers to this as "Rapaelesque pathos". St. Bartholomew is one of the Apostles of Christ (Mark 3:14-19). After Christ's death he evangelized Arabia and Mesopotamia, traveled and preached the gospel as far as India, and was martyred in Armenia. It is believed that he was first flayed alive and then crucified on a cross upside down. St. Bartholomew is the patron Saint of all trades that deal with skin. In art he is often depicted flayed, carrying his skin, or on a cross turned upside down to make it easier for his torturers to strip off his skin and holding a knife which was the instrument of his martydom.
