Standard Bearer, The

Durer, Albrecht

207706 Durer, Albrecht The Standard Bearer c. 1500 B. 87; M. 92 4 1/2'' x 3'' Engraving on laid paper with threadbare margins. Signed with monogram in the plate, tree stump. According to Walter Strauss, The Intaglio prints of Albrecht Durer, Engravings Etchings and Drypoints, 1971, a "strong" Meder B impression with strong contrasts showing gaps in the contours of the mountains and wiping marks in the sky. Although no watermark was ever indicated for a Meder B impression of this engraving, a Meder A impression was printed on paper as late as 1519. According to both C. Dodgson, The Masters of Engraving and Etching: Albrecht Durer, 1926., and Heinrich Wofflen, Die Kunst Albrecht Durer, 1905., the figure resembles Adam of Durer's own engraving (B.1, M.1). There is much debate as to the date of this engraving. Scholars vary the date before 1500 until after his second Italian journey of 1506-1507. F.W.H. Hollstein, German engravings, Etching and Woodcuts, 1962, says that this is the first use of a tablet with hanger for the monogram, which coincides with its use in the woodcut cycle of the Death of a Virgin (B. 76, B. 95).
