163694 Durer, Albrecht Virgin with the Infant Christ and St. Anne c. 1500 B.29, M.43 4 5/8'' x 2 7/8'' Engraving on laid paper with threadbare margins. Monogram, lower left. Some discoloration in the upper right corner. According to Strauss, The Intaglio Prints of Albrecht Durer, Engravings Etchings and Drypoints, 1971, a very clear and distinct meder a-c impression with the "hair of the Virgin standing away from her head". Joseph Meder, Durer-Katalog, Ein Handbuch Uber Albrecht Durers Stiche, Radierungen, Holzschnitte, Deren Zustande, Ausgaben und Wasserzeichenn, 1971., refers to a scratch above the Virgin's head and three scratches across St. Anne's right leg, which appear in Meder b impressions but are not evident in this impression. Meder refers to this print as 'rare". B. Haussman, Durers Kupferstiche, Radirungen, Holzchnitte und Zeichnungen unter besonderer Berucksichtigung der dazu verwendten Papiere und deren Wasserzeichen, 1861., refers to this print as "a charming print" with "excellent impressions quite rare". Walter Strauss also points out (bibliographical reference same as above) that there is a resemblance of the posture of the Virgin and St. Anne in this engraving to Durer's woodcut, The Visitation (B. 84) from the Life of a Virgin cycle and also God is pictured in a similar fashion in the clouds in the woodcut, The Madonna with Joseph with five Angels (B.200).
