Abraham Francen, Apothecary

Rembrandt Van Rijn

207906 Rembrandt Van Rijn Abraham Francen, Apothecary 1657 B., Holl. 273; BB 57-2 6 1/8'' x 8 1/8'' Etching, drypoint and burin on cream laid paper with large, clean margins. Grapes with Thick Stem watermark (Ash and Fletcher 21 E.a., pg. 124) dating the paper to the recueil as reissued by P.F. Basan. Biorklund Barnard's tenth state of ten, White and Boon's tenth state of ten, Nowell Eusticke's ninth state of nine still showing the slipt stroke on the left cheek pointing toward the corner of the eye, and the addition of the horizontal shading to the upper trees through the window. According to Nowell Eusticke, a ninth state impression as issued by Bernard (1845) clearly showing the fine shading above the sitter and the tryptich from the eighth state as issued by Jean (1810). According to White and Boon, the sitter (b. 1613) was an apothecary and a collector (not an art dealer, as sometimes stated). He was a close friend of the artist, and acted as guardian to Rembrandt's and Hendrickje's daughter Cornelia. The changes from the sixth state onwards, altering the sitter's appearance was carried out by Watelet (1718-1785). Previously, Jan Six suggested that the early states portrayed Otto van Cattenburch, whose portrait Rembrandt agreed to etch, and only in the sixth state did Rembrandt transform the features into the likeness of Francen.
