Angel Appearing to the Shepher

Rembrandt Van Rijn

228444 Rembrandt Van Rijn The Angel Appearing to the Shepherds 1634 B., Holl. 44; H. 120; BB 34-J 10 1/2'' x 8 3/4'' Etching, burin, and drypoint on thin laid paper with large margins. Signed and dated in the plate, Rembrandt f. 1634, lower right. Biorklund Barnard's third state of three, White and Boon's third state of three, and Nowell Eusticke's second state of five (after three trial proofs) with the shading added to the trunk of the tree, the second man from the left and the ground around him, the two distant cows to his right, and the wings of the angel. According to Nowell Eusticke, a second state impression as issued by H.L. Basan (1807) with the entire plate reworked with the graver with much roulette work in the shadows, with wear in the background, and the bridge indistinct. The Angel Appearing to the Shepherds is Rembrandt's first nocturnal etching. The first of its kind, combining etching and drypoint with engraved lines to create a mezzotint effect with chiaroscuro, is only reinforced with the three trial proofs he put the plate through before he was satisfied with the desired effect. According to Schwartz, this is an illustration from the New Testament, Luke 2: 8-14.
