77438 MCA/Universal Balto & Jenna 10 1/2'' x 12 1/2'' Sericel. From the edition of 9500. The story of Balto is based around the true and inspiring events which took place in Alaska during the winter of 1925. It was the winter of 1925, and Nome, Alaska was afflicted by a deadly diphtheria epidemic. Most of the children in the town were sick with the disease. The only way of saving the children was to give them antitoxin, but the town's supply had run out. A fierce blizzard was raging in the city of Anchorage, the airports and docks were impassable and the rail line did not reach as far as Nome -- the only hope was to send a sled team out into the storm to fetch the medicine. Steele's sled team is selected for the important journey to Anchorage. The sled team collects the antitoxin, but Steele loses the way in the blizzard. Balto, the town outcast (half-dog/half-wolf) sets out heroically on his own to rescue them. Balto cunningly marks his trail and finds the lost sled team. Outraged at his own failure, Steele runs off and ruins Balto's marks on the trail -- confusing Balto with marks of his own. Steele returns to the town of Nome alone -- and with a lie. ``I tried to save them, but all was lost,'' claims Steele. Just when the town has lost all hope for the sick children -- Balto returns with the sled team and medicine, and receives a hero's welcome! Many years later the famous Iditarod race was invented because of this event and is considered the last great race on Earth more than 70 years later.
