220237 Rembrandt Van Rijn Christ at Emmaus 1654 B. 87, BB. 54-H 8 3/8'' x 6 3/8'' Etching, burin and drypoint on thick laid paper, trimmed inside the platemark. Signed and dated in the plate, Rembrandt f. 1654, lower left. Biorklund Barnard's third state of three, White and Boon's third state of three, and Nowell Eusticke's fourth state of four showing the shading of the table below the cloth immediately in front of the man descending the stairs. According to Nowell Eusticke, a fourth state impression asi issued by Bernard (c. 1845) with the worn shading beneath Christ's feet strongly retouched with horizontal and diagonal left to right lines. Nowell Eusticke refers to this impression as "strong". According to Schwartz, this is an illustration from the New Testament, Luke 24: 13-31.
