226746 Rembrandt Van Rijn Christ Driving the Money Changers from the Temple 1635 B.,Holl.69; H.126 BB 35-B 5 1/2'' x 6 3/4'' Etching and drypoint on wove paper with clean, large margins. Signed and dated in the plate lower right, Rembrandt f. 1635. Biorklund Barnard's third state of three, White and Boon's second state of two, and Nowell Eusticke's fifth state of seven, showing the crosshatching in the white space to the left of the left foot of the man seated in the foreground, and the man to the right being dragged by the cow with an enormously large mouth and the sole of his shoe is white. An early fifth state impression as issued by Bernard (1846), before the strong left to right diagonal shading is added to the lower left corner in Bernard's sixth state impression. According to Schwartz, this is an illustration from the New Testament, John 2: 13-17.
