Birdy and the Beast

Animation Art

74041 Warner Bros. Studio Birdy and the Beast 1989 10 9/16'' x 12 1/2 (celluloid size) This hand-painted animation cel, from a limited edition of 500, was produced by the Warner Bros. Studio using the same methods employed in preparing cels for actual production. The pose was taken from original animation, and the background lithography printed on a premium stock. This cel with background is from the original animation of Bob Clampett's 1944 cartoon "Birdy and the Beast," starring Tweety. This was the second cartoon Tweety ever made, and the first time he was featured. The little naked bird repeatedly rebuffs the putty tat's efforts to make him his next meal. Tweety ultimately wreaks havoc on the poor putty tat. In this scene, Tweety walks into the cat's mouth and then strikes a match when it becomes too dark to see. It was soon after Tweety's third cartoon that the censors said that the bird looked naked. Instead of putting little pants on Tweety, Bob decided to put yellow feathers on him and make him a canary.
