Erte ( Romain De Tirtoff )
200383 Erte (Romain de Tirtoff) Bus 1967 7 1/2'' x 11 1/2'' Gouache painting in color on wove paper. Signed in the right margin. Annotated on the verso. A unique work. From the collection of the artist. Erte's gouache paintings and drawings were typically used for the purpose of costume designs, particularly for the theatre. He designed costumes for some of the most famous performances of the 20th century. Erte's gouache paintings often included a second or third painting of essentially the same subject. These paintings would be used by the various directors and producers of the performances. In some cases, there were no additional paintings, however, there were never more than three paintings of essentially the same subject. From time to time Erte would create variations using different colors, backgrounds and poses. These variations would also never have more than three paintings of essentially the same subject. The records of the exact number of paintings of each subject are in the possession of Mr. Serge Leeman, Residuary Legatee (major inheritor) of the Estate of Erte. The first painting created usually, but not always, was stamped on the back ``composition originale''. Additional paintings were either painted by Erte or in concert with his studio assistants and usually, but not always, were stamped ``reproduction par Erte de son oeuvre originale''. Literally translated from French, this means reproduction by Erte of his original work. A more correct translation would be recreation by Erte of his original work. Erte was one of the famous artists of the 20th century who would create more than one painting from a particular subject and would use assistants in their creation. This practice was widely used by important 20th century artists, including Victor Vasarely and Yaacov Agam amongst many others. The concept of using studio assistants in the creation of paintings dates all the way back to the great masters and includes both Peter Paul Rubens and Rembrandt van Rijn. Rembrandt, in fact, had a studio employing more than thirty technical assistants for the creation of his paintings when he was in his late twenties. As these paintings by Erte were created completely by hand either totally by Erte or with Erte's participation and complete control, they are unquestionably important works of the master. They provide collectors of Erte and Art Deco one of the exceptional collecting opportunites of the late 20th century.
