Rembrandt Van Rijn

214054 Rembrandt Van Rijn Crucifixion: Small Plate, The c. 1635 B. 80, BB. 35-1 3 3/4'' x 2 5/8'' Etching on thin laid paper with large, clean margins. Signed and dated in the plate, Rembrandt f. c. 1635, upper margin. Biorklund Barnard's first and only state, and Nowell Eusticke's first state of four with the break in the outline of Christ's stomach. According to Nowell Eusticke, and early first state impression with the shading on the cross in back of Christ sharp and clear, and a long diagonal left to right scratch just below the signature. Nowell Eusticke refers to this seventeenth century impression as "rather delicate". It is interesting to note that both Biorklund Barnard and Nowell Eusticke refer to the date as being signed in the plate, Rembrandt f. (undated). According to Schwartz, this is an illustration from the New Testament, Matthew 27: 33-56.
