Christ Taking Leave of His Mot

Durer, Albrecht

123017 Durer, Albrecht Christ Taking Leave of His Mother From ``The Life of the Virgin'' c. 1504 11 3/4'' x 8 1/4'' Woodcut on laid paper with watermark. Signed in the block with monogram. Seventeen blocks of this series were completed before Durer's second Italian journey in 1505; in 1510 Durer created two more images to complete the series plus a title page. The text for this series was written by B. Chelidonius in 1511 and follows the apocryphal gospels of James and the childhood stories of Thomas. Compositionally, the series reflects clearly Durer's interest in perspective drawing. D. Kuhrmann describes ``The Life of the Virgin'' as nothing less than a `pattern book of perspective' which at the same time reveals how Durer gradually achieved a harmonious equilibrium between the development of pictorial space and the placement of motives within pictorial surface. (Durer exhibition, Munich 1971/72)
