Rembrandt Van Rijn
206836 Rembrandt Van Rijn David in Prayer (also known as David at Prayer) 1652 B., Holl. 41; BB. 52-C 5 1/2'' x 3 3/4'' Etching on laid paper with small margins. Signed and dated in the plate, Rembrandt f. 1652, below the harp. Slight paper loss in the white space of the margins only. Biorklund Barnard's third state of three, White and Boon's third state of three, and Nowell Eusticke's second state of three with the horizontal slipt stroke across David's lower back and the light spots between the posts of the bed very visible. An intermediate third state impression as issued by P.F. Basan (1785-1797). Nowell Eusticke refers to this impression as "fairly strong". According to Schwartz, this is presumably a depiction from the Old Testament, Samuel 2:12.
