123047 Rembrandt Van Rijn The Death of the Virgin 1639 15 1/4'' x 12 1/4'' B., Holl.99; H.161; B.B.39-A Etching and drypoint on off-white laid paper with large margins. Signed and dated in the plate, lower left. The fourth state of five, according to Nowell-Eusticke. From the P.F.Basan receuil, as issued in 1789-1797. Showing the vertical shading on the formost bedpost and the strong shading on the back of the reader. Before the reworking of the plate that appears in the Jean and early Bernard receuils. Around 1846, the plate for the "Death of the Virgin" was lost. The later recueils of both Bernard and Beaumont do not contain examples of the original etching by Rembrandt.
