228642 Rembrandt Van Rijn Head of Saskia and Others 1636 B. 365; H. 145; BB. 36-B 6'' x 5'' Etching on thick laid paper with clean, substantial margins. Signed and dated in the plate, "Rembrandt f. 1636", lower center. Biorklund Barnard's first and only state and Nowell Eusticke's second state of two showing the faint horizontal scratch between the turban at left and Saskia's head. According to Nowell-Eusticke, a late second state impression as issued by Bernard (1845) with the long diagonal scratch over Saskia's left eyelid and the foul biting on Saskia's chin gone. Nowell Eusticke refers to this impression as "quite strong and satisfactory". Saskia van Uylenburgh was the daughter of a burgomaster of Leeuwarden. She married Rembrandt in 1634 and died in 1644 after a lingering illness from giving birth to Titus.
