Death of the Virgin, The
Durer, Albrecht
104376 Durer, Albrecht The Death of the Virgin B.93, M., Holl.205 11 1/2'' x 8 1/8'' Woodcut on laid paper. Signed in the block with the monogram. Dated in the block. With the Fischblase watermark, dating the paper to c. 1580. Seventeen blocks of this series were completed before Durer's second Italian journey in 1505; in 1510 Durer created two more images to complete the series plus a title page. The text for this series was written by B. Chelidonius in 1511 and follows the apocryphal gospels of James and the childhood stories of Thomas. Compositionally, the series reflects clearly Durer's interest in perspective drawing. D. Kuhrmann describes ``The Life of the Virgin'' as nothing less than a `pattern book of perspective' which at the same time reveals how Durer gradually achieved a harmonious equilibrium between the development of pictorial space and the placement of motives within pictorial surface.
