207870 Rembrandt Van Rijn Jacob Haaringh (also known as Young Haaringh) B., Holl. 275; BB. 55-E 1655 4 1/2'' x 4 1/4'' Etching on thin wove paper with clean, small margins. Signed and dated in the plate, Rembrandt f. 1655, above the window sill. Slight paper loss in the image and right lower margin. Biorklund Barnard's fifth state of five, White and Boon's fifth state of five, and Nowell Eusticke's fourth state of five after the reduction of the plate to 118 X 105mm showing head and shoulders only. According to Nowell Eusticke, an intermediate fourth state impression as issued by Jean (1810) showing some traces left of the picture added to the left wall in the third state, and slight wear in the face of the sitter and in the folds of his garment. According to Schwartz, the subject is a distant relative of Thomas Haringh who is portrayed in Rembrandt's etching of the same title, Pieter was the auctioneer of the Amsterdam insolvency chamber. The subject was formerly thought to be Thomas's son, Jacob Haringh. White and Boon refers to the sitter as the son of Thomas Jacobsz Haaringh (B.274), a lawyer in Utrecht, whom Rembrandt visited between 1652 and 1655.
