226760 Rembrandt Van Rijn Jan Asselyn, Painter 1647 B., Holl. 277; BB. 47-1 8 1/2'' x 6 3/4'' Etching and drypoint on cream laid paper with small margins. Signed and dated Rembr f. 16 (with the last two digits illegible), lower right corner. Biorklund Barnard's fourth state of four, White and Boon's third state of three, and Nowell Eusticke's fifth state of six after the plate is entirely rebitten and reworked with the fine shading added inside the contour of the cloak in the lower right corner. According to Nowell Eusticke, a fifth state impression as issued by Jean (1810) with the plain left to right diagonal shading added to the left shoulder, and crosshatching added to the blank space to the left of the right cheek According to White and Boon, the sitter, Jan Asselyn returned from Rome in 1645 and married the sister of a former pupil of Rembrandt, Ferdinand Bol. The term Crabtree comes from a deformity in the sitter's hands.
