Rembrandt Van Rijn
231661 Rembrandt Van Rijn Jan Lutma, Goldsmith B., Holl. 276; BB. 56-C 1656 7 7/8'' x 6'' Etching, drypoint and burin on thick, cream laid paper with wide margins. Signed and dated in the plate, Rembrandt f. 1656, upper left of windowpane. Biorklund Barnard's third state of three, White and Boon's third state of three and Nowell Eusticke's fourth state of six after the plate is heavily reworked beneath the table lower right and slightly curved diagonal lines are added to the small triangular area of shading at the top right 5-10 mm from margin. According to Nowell Eusticke, a late fourth state impression as issued by Jean (1810) with the plate being entirely rebitten and reworked, but showing wear in the background of the window and the horizontal lines in the upper right corner. In White and Boon's commentary, the sitter, Jan Lutma (1584-1669) was a well-known goldsmith in Amsterdam. His son, Jan Lutma the Younger, was an etcher and may have been responsible for the inscription "Joannes Lutma Aurifex Natus Groningae" added in the second state (by the sitter's left elbow).
