Jews in Synagogue

Rembrandt Van Rijn

228470 Rembrandt Van Rijn Jews in Synagogue 1648 B., Holl. 126; H.234; BB. 48-D 2 7/8'' x 5 1/8'' Etching and drypoint on thick laid paper with clean, large margins. Signed and dated in the plate, Rembrandt f. 1648, just above and to the right of the standing man with the walking stick. Biorklund Barnard's third state of three, White and Boon's third state of three, and Nowell Eusticke's fifth state of seven, after the addition of heavy verticals in the background where the ends of the lines are clearly visible at the top edge. According to Nowell Eusticke an intermediate fifth state impression as issued to H.L. Basan (1807), showing vice marks in lower left corner, and shading on vest of the man holding the cane just above his right hand. Nowell Eusticke refers to the plate as "rather uncommon" and "delicate". The Pharisees was one of the two most well-known Jewish sects from the time of Jesus (along with the Sadducees). White and Boon further comment that the traditional title cannot be correct because Rembrandt shows Mizrachi and Ashkenazi Jews in one interior, whereas these two different sects never met in the same synagogues.
