226741 Rembrandt Van Rijn Joseph and Potiphar's Wife 1634 B., Holl. 39; BB. 34-G 3 5/8'' x 4 1/2'' Etching on thick laid paper with small margins. Signed and dated in the plate, Rembrandt f. 1634, bottom left. Biorklund Barnard's second state of two, White and Boon's second state of two, and Nowell Eusticke's third state of five, after the white spot on the curtain close to the woman's head is filled in, and the light parallel verticals are added to the little finger of Joseph's left hand. According to Nowell Eusticke, a late third state impression as issued by H.L. Basan (1807) after the top right corner is filled with close left to right diagonal shading with the background light, showing some wear in the shading particularly around the bedpost. According to Schwartz, this is an illustration from the Old Testament, Genesis 39:7-12.
