226751 Rembrandt Van Rijn Joseph Telling His Dreams 1638 B., Holl. 37; BB. 38-E 4 3/8'' x 3 1/4'' Etching on laid paper with threadbare margins. Signed and dated in the plate lower left, Rembrandt f. 1638, in the block beneath the seated man (Jacob). Biorklund Barnard's third state of four, White and Boon's second state of three, and Nowell Eusticke's second state of five after the face of the man in the turban behind Joseph and the curtain are shaded (Le visage noir). According to Nowell Eusticke, an early second state impression, before the close shading is added between Joseph's left arm and the girl's cheek by P.F. Basan (1785-1797). A 17th century impression. Nowell Eusticke refers to this impression as "fairly strong". According to Schwartz, this is an illustration from the Old Testament, Genesis 37:1-11.
