228602 Rembrandt Van Rijn Joseph Telling His Dreams 1638 B., Holl. 37, B.B. 38-E 4 3/8'' x 3 1/4" Etching on thick cream laid paper with threadbare margins. Signed and dated in the plate lower left, Rembrandt f. 1638, in the block beneath the seated man (Jacob). Biorklund Barnard's fourth state of four, White and Boon's third state of three, and Nowell Eusticke's fifth state of five, after the addition of the cross diagonal shading on the flat table top, the shading on the heads in the background, and the curtain and door behind the turbaned man on the right. A fifth state impression as issued by Bernard (1845) with the plate retouched, particularly in the foreground where the plank in front of the old man's foot clearly stands out. According to Schwartz, this is an illustration from the Old Testament, Genesis 37:1-11.
