207495 Rembrandt Van Rijn Lieven van Coppenol: Large Plate 1658 B., Holl. 283; BB. 58-F 5 1/2'' x 5 1/4'' Etching, drypoint, and burin on thick laid paper with large margins. Biorklund Barnard's sixth state of six, White and Boon's sixth state of six, and Nowell Eusticke's ninth state of eleven, after the plate is reduced to 159 x 133mm, leaving only the shoulders and head. According to Nowell Eusticke, an intermediate ninth state impression as issued by P.F. Basan (1785-1797) with the fine lines still visible in the cheeks and the horizontal shading added to the upper right and lower left corners. According to White and Boon, the sitter (1559-1667) was at one time a master at the French school. His hobby was calligraphy, and he travelled around Holland giving displays. He also ran a school on the Singel.
