228656 Rembrandt Van Rijn Old Man with a Divided Fur Cap 1640 B., Holl. 265; BB. 40-A 5 7/8'' x 5 1/2'' Etching and drypoint on laid paper with threadbare margins. Signed and dated in the plate, Rembrandt f. 1640, upper left. Possible Initials AD countermark watermark (Ash and Fletcher AD a., pg. 139). Ash and Fletcher cite Rembrandt's Old Man with a Divided Fur Cap, as having "nearly identical watermarks to the above:" Double wired AD. Biorklund Barnard's second state of three, White and Boon's second state of two, and Nowell Eusticke's second state of three after the slipt stroke from the cap to the left cheek is worn. According to Nowell Eusticke, a late second state impression still showing the "erased" thumb of the right hand above the present one and the strengthening of the line of the mouth and the pper eyelid.
