John the Baptist & St. Onuphri
Durer, Albrecht
176581 Durer, Albrecht John the Baptist & St. Onuphrius B. 112; M., Holl.230 c.1503 8 5/8'' x 5 3/4'' Wooduct on laid paper with small margins. Mounted on thick laid, cardboard support. Signed in the block with the monogram, bottom center. A fine Meder F impression still showing the gap at the hut in the background with the border over-blackened unequally, with the 5 cm long taper along right edge. According to Joseph Meder, Durer-Katalog, Ein Handbuch Uber Albrecht Durers Stiche, Radierungen, Holzschnitte, Deren Zustande, Ausgaben und Wasserzeichenn, 1931., this was printed around 1580-1600. St. Onuphrius lived for 70 years as a hermit in the desert near Thebais, Upper Egypt. He lived on the fruits of a date palm-tree that grew near his cell. He wore nothing, but a loin-cloth of leaves and closed his body with his abundant hair. He died c.400 and was buried by St. Paphnutius who had come to him to learn if the hermit's life was for him. St. Onuphrius is a patron saint of weavers. Since the Middle ages St. John the Baptist is usually depicted wearing sheepskin, carrying a stick topped by a crucifix, a medallion with a lamb, or accompanied by a white lamb.
