179156 Chagall, Marc Josue Lit les Paroles de la Loi (Joshua Reads the Words of the Law) 1931-39 S. 245 11 1/2'' x 9 1/8'' Etching on Montval paper. Signed in the plate, lower left. One of 105 etchings comprising Chagall's ``Bible'', commissioned by Ambroise Vollard. Sixty-six etchings were printed by Maurice Potin from 1931-39 and thirty-nine were printed by Raymond Haasen from 1952-56. From the hors commerce edition of 20 (a numbered edition of 275 proofs and an edition of 100 with hand-coloring on Arches paper, initialled by the artist and numbered also exist). Published by Teriade in 1956. ``La Bible'' is one of Chagall's most important works. The work was originally commissioned by Ambroise Vollard in 1930. The artist spent the next eight years from 1931 to 1939 etching the plates. Printing of the plates took place after the War, at first in Maurice Potin's studio and later at Raymond Haasen's. The copper plates were subsequently cancelled and given to the Musee National Message Biblique in Nice by Marc and Vava Chagall.
