Bacchanale

Picasso, Pablo

164090 Picasso, Pablo (after) Bacchanale 1955 19 1/2'' x 22'' Aquatint in color on BFK Rives paper. Signed in pencil lower right. Annotated "e.a" from the artist proof edition (aside from the numbered edition of 300 examples). Published by Atelier Crommelynck, Paris, with their blindstamp lower left margin. This work, based on a painting by Picasso reveals a theme frequently used in his work, that of the bacchanale or celebration. In this interpretation, a young boy reminiscent if Picasso's Blue period subjects quietly contemplates the seated musician's song, while an older figure, dressed in Picasso's own signature striped shirt, looks off into the distance as if lost in reverie. This exquisitely printed color aquatint typifies the series of color interpretations of Picasso's paintings into graphic works (lithographs, pochoirs and aquatints) that occupied the artist throughout the late 1950's into the 1960's, as published by Crommelynck, Picasso's primary etcher, The Barcelona Museum, and Guy Spitzer. These works, due to their sheer pictorial quality, have become among the most sought after examples of hand-signed Picasso graphics by collectors internationally.
