Pichet Espagnol (A.R. 244)
Picasso, Pablo
205325 Picasso, Pablo Pichet Espagnol (A.R. 244) (Spanish Pitcher) 1954 A.R. 244 8 1/4'' height White earthenware clay turned pitcher. Decoration in engobes, knife engraved. glaze inside in blue and black. Stamped 'Edition Picasso' and 'Madoura Plein Feu' and inscribed 'Edition Picasso' on the verso. From the numbered edition of 300 examples. In July of 1946, Picasso and his friend Louis Fort visited the potters exhibition in Vallauris, France. Here Picasso saw the Madoura ceramics display and was invited to see the workshop. Inspired, he created a few pieces that day and returned a year later in anticipation of working again. The ceramics were created in a manner similar to the graphic arts. It was important to keep the graphic process and apply it to a new medium. With the help of Suzanne and George Ramie, replicas were created in repeating volumes and illuminations as well as transfer from an original subject onto fresh clay. This new outlet for Picasso added new depth to his already large body of work.
