164087 Rembrandt Van Rijn The Bathers 1651 4 1/4'' x 5 3/8'' B.195; BB.51-B; H.195 Etching on thick laid paper with substantial margins. Signed and dated in plate Rembrandt f. 1651, bottom left. Collector's stamp on verso from Max Hausdorff (not in Lugt.) Biorklund Barnard's second state of two; Nowell Usticke's third state of three; White and Boon's second state of six, after the appearance of a corrosion spot near the center of the upper margin; the plate edges were made even; scratch in drypoint resembling the letter B appears above the right lower bank; and another scratch in drypoint in upper left bank that appears to be BVD. A late third and final state according to Nowell Eusticke as issued from the Jean recueil (1810), where the acid spot and and drypoint letters are barely discernible. According to Schwartz, the five in the date was changed in drypoint from a three.
