202424 Rembrandt Van Rijn Beheading of John the Baptist B. 92, H. 171, BB. 40-B 1640 5'' x 4'' Etching and drypoint on thick, cream laid paper with small margins. Signed and dated in the plate, Rembrandt f. 1640, lower left. Biorklund Barnard's third state of three, White and Boon's second state of two, and Nowell Eusticke's third state of four with the outline of the pikes and helmets to the left strenghtened. According to Nowell Eusticke, an intermediate third state impression as issued by P.F. Basan (1785-1797) showing the diagonal shading added to the right shoulder and neck of St. John. According to Schwartz, this is an illustration from the New Testament, Matthew 14:3-11.
