196070 Rembrandt Van Rijn Christ Crucified between the Two Thieves B. 79, H. 173, BB. 41-2 c.1641 5 1/8'' x 3 7/8'' Etching and drypoint on thin wove paper. Trimmed along the oval platemark with small margins. Collector's stamps, verso, of Charles Delangelade (Lugt 660), black ink, born in 1870, a sculptor who lived in Marseilles and principally collected Rembrandt; and, Johann William Nahl (Lugt 1954), (1803-1880), blue ink, a painter from Cassel who abandoned painting to collect old master prints. Biorklund Barnard's second state of two, White and Boon's second state of two, and Nowell Eusticke's third state of three showing the left arm of the far left cross rounded and not touching the border. According to Nowell Esticke, an early third state impression as issued in the Collection of 200 Etchings (1816) by J. M. Creery, showing wear in the fine diagonal shading above Christ's head and the scroll and in the space to the left of Christ's back. According to Schwartz, this is an illustration from the New Testament, Mathew 27:33-56.
