Biorklund Barnard's third state of three, White and Boon's third state of three, Nowell Eusticke's fourth state of six, after the strong horizontal shading has cut off the left hand portion of the turban on Joseph's head, the bare patch along the upper left border about four inches from the left is filled in with horizontal shading, the vault, pillars, and rays sharply defined, and the peak of the hat of the man to the left of Joseph is reduced and his face is clearly outlined. An early fourth state impression as issued by P.F. Basan (1785-1797), where the impression is fairly strong particularly of Simeon and Mary. According to Schwartz, the action of the etching precedes the actual presentation as depicted in Luke 2:22-38
