A Fine Bijar Carpet, West Pers

Oriental Carpet

118307 Oriental Carpet A Fine Bijar Carpet, West Persia early 20th century 152'' x 107'' (12'8" x 8'11") The shaded brick-red field with stylised floral vases, palmettes and leafy vine around shaped medallion with pendants containing palmette cartouches and rosettes enclosing radiating floral centrepiece, spandrels similar, in an indigo border of polychrome palmettes, leafy sprays and floral meander between shaded green and ivory floral meander stripes, outer plain stripe. Carpets from West Persia are characterized by smaller central medallions and detailed floral motifs. In the Bijar style there are so many palmettes and floral motifs that they appear to be piled one on top of the other. The movement in the Bijar carpet creates a three dimensional effect in which the small, central medallion acts as a vanishing point. Bijar carpets are made with a high knot density, on average each square inch contains 500 knots.
