A Fine Karaja Runner, Northwes

Oriental Carpet

118304 Oriental Carpet A Fine Karaja Runner, Northwest Persia early 20th century 174'' x 42'' (14'6" x 3'6") The shaded rust field with single column of eleven hooked and serrated floral medallions flanked by various angular floral motifs, in an ivory border of polychrome rosettes between light blue and ivory floral meander and barber-pole stripes. The Persian runner was developed in the Islamic world to replace the animal skins that warmed the narrow walkway between the chamber of a man and that of a woman. Runners do not have a single, central medallion, but instead a series of geometric medallions set in a column down the runner's center. The string of medallions look like a series of knots, which represent wisdom and immortality. This Karaja runner is distinctly from the North-western portion of Persia, and has a red hue similar to the "Heriz red."
