Carpet weaving is a tradition that began in Persia centuries before the Common Era. Carpets filled a utilitarian function for the nomadic tribes, who used them to replace the animal skins that lined their tent walls and floors. The skill of weaving was handed down from elder generation to younger and became a source of great pride to the Persian people. Among the most intricately patterned carpet styles, the Sarouk design is characterized by a smaller central medallion and tendrils that are more delicate than those in other Persian carpet styles. On average the Sarouk carpet contains 500 knots per square inch.
