From the city of Tabriz located at the foot of the Sahard volcano, the Tabriz style has been most heavily influenced by Oriental carpet design. Continuing a tradition that began in the Middle Ages, carpet weavers use dark reds, blues, and contrasting ivory to create a central medallion with an overall oval or round shape. These rugs are primarily woven with cotton, and only occasionally have wefts of wool. Carpets from Tabriz have an average of 600 knots per square inch.
