118306 Oriental Carpet A Fine Tabriz Carpet, Northwest Persia early 20th century 154'' x 118'' (12'10" x 9'10") The indigo field with angular floral vine, bold hooked palmettes and leaves around large ivory floral medallion with palmette pendants containing similar smaller peach medallion with floral centrepiece, large polychrome palmette in each corner, in broad peach and ivory border of interlocked reciprocal skittle-pattern motif divided by large palmettes in each corner between pale blue palmette vine stripes , outer plain stripes. From the city of Tabriz located at the foot of the Sahard volcano, the Tabriz style is most heavily influenced by Oriental carpet design. Continuing a tradition that began in the Middle Ages, carpet weavers use dark reds, blues, and contrasting ivory to create a central medallion with an overall oval or round shape. These rugs are primarily woven with cotton, and only occasionally have wefts of wool. Carpets from Tabriz have an average of 600 knots per square inch.
