118314 Oriental Carpet A Fine Tabriz Carpet, Northwest Persia 160'' x 118'' (13'4" x 9'10") probably early 20th century The pale green field with scrolling arabesques and meandering floral and fruity vine around ivory cusped medallion with bold palmette pendants containing similar design enclosing smaller pale blue and green double floral centrepiece, ivory and apricot spandrels similar, in beige border of stylised part floral panels, floral and leafy vine together with arabesques between yellow and green floral and arabesque stripes,outer reciprocal stripe. From the city of Tabriz located at the foot of the Sahard volcano, the Tabriz style is most heavily influenced by Oriental carpet design. Continuing a tradition that began in the Middle Ages, carpet weavers use dark reds, blues, and contrasting ivory to create a central medallion with an overall oval or round shape. These rugs are primarily woven with cotton, and only occasionally have wefts of wool. Carpets from Tabriz have an average of 600 knots per square inch.
