Adoration of the Shepherds

Rembrandt Van Rijn

228479 Rembrandt Van Rijn Adoration of the Shepherds: with the Lamp c.1654 B.,Holl.45; H.120; BB-54-1 4 1/8'' x 5 1/8'' Etching on thin laid paper with threadbare margins. Signed and dated in the plate, Rembrandt f., lower left. Biorklund Barnard's second state of two, White and Boon's second state of two, and Nowell-Eusticke's second state of three after the long white flaw along the top right border is worked over with fine crosshatching in the Watelet retouch. According to Nowell-Eusticke, an intermediate second state impression as issued by H.L. Basan (1807) with the small dash under the "R" of the signature is elongated and curved. It is interesting to note that White and Boon make reference to the signature in the plate as Rembrandt f. c. 1654, while Biorklund Barnard notes that it was signed, Rembrandt f. 16 (with the last two digits missing). According to Schwartz, this is an illustration from the New Testament, Luke 2: 15-16.
