118316 Oriental Carpet A Heriz Carpet, Northwest Persia early 20th century 138'' x 63'' (11'6" x 7'9") The shaded rust field with palmette and leafy vine around large indigo and yellow medallion with hooked palmette pendants, containing similar design enclosing dusty-pink radiating floral panel centrepiece, ivory spandrells similar, in shaded indigo border of polychrome turtle-palmettes and angular floral vine between yellow palmette vine stripes, outer light blue lozenge and plain stripes. The Heriz carpet field is made from cotton that has been dyed "Heriz red," a deep, blood colored hue. The most characteristic feature of this style of Persian carpet is the central, rectangular medallion. On average there are 250 knots per square inch in Heriz carpets. Brown, beige, and turquoise hues that are intermixed with the "Heriz red" indicate older carpet pieces. Antique Heriz carpets are among the highest quality Persian carpet on the market.
