A Karaja Runner, Northwest Per

Oriental Carpet

118311 Oriental Carpet A Karaja Runner, Northwest Persia late 19th century 189'' x 37'' (15'9" x 3'1") The shaded rust-red field with single column of nine hooked and stepped polychrome medallions flanked by hooked panels and angular floral motifs, in shaded blue border of stellar flowerheads and stylised palmettes between ivory and rust-red floral meander stripes, outer plain stripe. The Persian runner was developed in the Islamic world to warm the narrow walkway between the chamber of a man and that of a woman. Characteristically, runners have more geometric medallions and edges than full-sized carpets. Rather than one central medallion, runners are designed with a central column of medallions. The row of medallions is similar to the pattern of a rope tied in knots.
