A Massive Northwest Persia Car
Oriental Carpet
118318 Oriental Carpet A Massive Northwest Persian Carpet of Ziegler Design early 20th century 273'' x 168'' (22'9" x 14') The ivory field with overall design of large polychrome palmette together with angular floral and leafy vine, in broad light beige border of stylised large palmettes and leafy vine between triple floral meander stripes, outer plain stripe. Carpet weaving is a tradition that began in Persia centuries before the Common Era. Carpets filled a utilitarian function for the nomadic tribes, who used them to replace the animal skins that lined their tent walls and floors. The skill of weaving was handed down from elder generation to younger and became a source of great pride to the Persian people. Unlike the Heriz and Tabriz carpets from Northwestern Persia, this massive carpet does not have a central medallion. Instead, the decorative elements create a unique rhythm that directs the eye up and down the carpet. The main motif is the peony motif, a type of floral design that symbolized wealth.
